Consulting
| | American Watchmakers-Clockmakers
Institute
This was originally a professional organization, originally for
watchmakers, but now extended to clockmakers and amateur horologists.. It
publishes Horological Times, which has articles on watch and
clockmaking. The AWI offers courses on watchmaking and clockmaking in its Ohio
headquarters and elsewhere. British Horological
Institute
Initially for professional clockmakers and watchmakers, the BHI now
has many associates interested in horology as a hobby. Its Horological
Journal includes horological news and articles on clockmaking and watch
making.
The Hints and
Tips section of their Web site is a valuable collection of information,
perhaps the largest on the Web; much was gleaned from the Clocks Mailing List.
Courses are offered at its British headquarters. National Assocation of Watch and
Clock Collectors
This association publishes a Bulletin, which features
historical articles and some on clockmaking and watchmaking. Its School of
Horology in Columbia, Pennsylvania, USA offers courses leading to degrees; it
also has short courses open to members. Its member's Lending Library is a
valuable source of horological books and back issues of its
Bulletin. |

OF
WATCHFUL INTEREST
|
|
The
wristwatch is the tool of time, becoming popular about the time of
the First World War 1915. Great names in the wrist watch industry
such as Rolex,
and Omega
have been the servants of man for a decades. The Rolex
has evolved into a fashion statement. The Omega
was the first wristwatch to reach the moon. Newer names in watches
such as Fossil
and Seiko
have found favor with the budget conscious. Rolex,
Ebel,
and Jaeger/LeCoultre
to name only a few, dominate the high price range.
These
hi-grade watches are created using time honored mechanical
movements. Over the years other great companies have emerged, ETA,
the largest manufacturer of mechanical movements, supplies nearly
every great Swiss wristwatch manufacturer. Companies like d.freemont,
Hublot,
Omega,
Chronoswiss,
use these ETA movements.

Horology - the science of
timekeeping - has a lot going for it as a hobby. For most hobbyists, horology
means collecting and repairing clocks and watches. Here are a few thoughts:
If you like working with your
hands you can repair clocks, or make your own. If you are into electronics, you
can invent new timekeepers which the world has never seen before!
To the left you will see the
beautiful Oris Pendulette, an interesting combination of pocket watch and desk
clock. Unfortunately you can't see it in it's true glory because I've had to
compress it so much to achieve a reasonable download time. But in common with
all modern Oris watches it has a beautifully presented case and dial and good
quality movement from the ETA range. I would strongly recommend that you look at
the Oris range if you are interested in a medium cost mechanical watch (£150 to
£700 in the UK).
