Web
Technology:
what the terminology means..
-
A dynamic website will usually have
some HTML pages, but many of the pages will be generated on the fly,
using information stored in the underlying database. (See sample E-Commerce
Website)
-
One clear advantage lies in the ease of
maintenance; if the information in the database is changed, it will in
turn change all the pages it generates.
-
We use two Microsoft databases for this
work. For smaller sites with less traffic, Microsoft Access may be
used; for larger sites, Microsoft SQLServer
(Click for SQL Example) is the ticket.
Access and SQLServer are very flexible, since they are both programmed
using Structured Query Language (SQL) plus VB derivatives.
SQLServer is also a great tool to quickly move large amounts of data,
using it's internal DTS module.
-
Active Server Pages (Click
for ASP Example Code) is used to
populate the dynamic pages. The connection between the database and ASP
is made with Active Data Objects (ADO).
-
At times, ASP, SQL or ADO are compiled
('encapsulated') for speed and security and reusability enhancement into
a chunk of code referred to as a 'dll', with a universal 'COM'
interface.
-
Creating the dll in the COM wrapper is usually done using the
Visual
Basic compiler (or Visual C). VB itself, is of course the world's
premier Rapid Aplication Development (RAD) tool. If the object is
used by more than one server, then it needs a Distributed Com
wrapper (DCOM). In order to manage different DCOM objects from
different servers, Microsoft Transaction Server (MTS) is
used.
-
The advantage of this interface is that
the COM object can be used via any COM enabled language such as
ASP, Visual Basic, Visual C, etc.
-
XML is a standard methodology
which can easily be used to format data in a universal manner. XML makes
it possible to interconnect two different datasets to each other by
using XML as common ground. ASP has standard methods of converting
standard ADO recordsets into XML and vice versa.
-
JavaScript
may be used in the
'Front-End' to perform such browser functions as open another browser
session, highlight selected hyperlinks, rollovers etc.
-
Web site design, programming and
implementation may be in many instances done from any location; contact
with the client(s) may be limited to email. Although very much dependent
on circumstances, the development of a dynamic website will take
somewhere between 50-200 hours of work. Please contact us for rates.
