Et quid amabo nisi quod aenigma est?
Berthot, 1979 | The Room De Chirico, 1914 | The Melancholy of Departure Baumeister, 1920 | Figurate with Red Ellipse

Jake Berthot, UntitledJake Berthot (1939-), American painter from Niagara Falls, NY. Berthot is well known for his geometrical and lyrical paintings, as well as having the distinction of being a great teacher. His paintings seem to reflect uncompromising integrity.   FvS, 2009 Giorgio de Chirico (1888-1978), Italian surrealist painter, and founder of the Metaphysical Painting movement.
'That de Chirico was a poet, and a great one, is not in dispute. He could condense voluminous feeling through metaphor and association. One can try to dissect these magical nodes of experience, yet not find what makes them cohere...

Early de Chiricos are full of such effects. Et quid amabo nisi quod aenigma est? ("What shall I love if not the enigma?"). He is able to manifest consciousness with a paintbrush and palette.

Willi Baumeister, in the eyes of his contemporaries:
"In my eyes, the name Baumeister takes an extremely important place among those of modern German artists." (Fernand Léger, 1949) "
He was the most European of German painters." (Will Grohmann, 1959)
"Willi Baumeister's art belongs to the healthy, natural, appealing appearances." (Wassily Kandinsky, 1935)
"You are going to have a future, with certainty."
(Le Corbusier to Baumeister, 1931)
