Giorgio
de Chirico (1888-1978), Italian surrealist painter, and
founder of the Metaphysical Painting movement.
'That de Chirico was a poet, and a great one, is not in dispute. He
could condense voluminous feeling through metaphor and association. One
can try to dissect these magical nodes of experience, yet not find what
makes them cohere...
Early de Chiricos are full of such effects. Et quid
amabo nisi quod aenigma est? ("What shall I love if not the enigma?").
He is able to manifest consciousness with a paintbrush and palette. |

Grohmann, 1959)
"Willi Baumeister's art belongs to the healthy, natural,
appealing appearances." (Wassily
Kandinsky, 1935)
"You are going to have a future, with certainty."
(Le
Corbusier to Baumeister, 1931)
